How Hand Sanitizers Prevent Illness
Public Health experts & authorities have recommended washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of harmful bacteria and germs and removes chemicals on hands. But if soap and water are not available for hand wash, using an authenticated hand sanitizer with at least 60% to 70% alcohol can kill the harmful germs and avoid getting sick, even spreading germs to others. The developed guidance for effective handwashing and hand sanitizer in community settings supported data from several surveys and studies.
Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly decrease the number of microbes (bacteria, germs, viruses) on hands, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs and dirt.
There are significant differences between using hand sanitizer and washing hands with soap and water. Soap and water eliminate all types of germs from hands. In comparison, hand sanitizer kills a certain kind of harmful microbes. Although alcohol-based hand sanitizer can quickly decrease the number of germs & viruses, it should use it in the proper process.
What are the active ingredients in hand sanitizers?
Generally, hand sanitizers available in the market contain alcohol, such as ethyl alcohol, as an active ingredient, which works as an antiseptic.
Other ingredients in hand sanitizer may include water, fragrance, and glycerine.
Hand sanitizers are not as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.
What is the best way to use hand sanitizers?
Directions:
Step 1: Take a few drops of the hand sanitizer on the palm of one hand.
Step 2: Rub your hands together correctly for 30 seconds.
Step 3: Rub the hand sanitizer on both sides of your hands (front and back, between fingers, around, and under the nails) until your hands get dry.

If soap and water are not available nearby, make sure to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
How does hand sanitizer work?
When soap and water are not available nearby, in that situation, alcohol-based hand sanitizer is the second-best option to clean your hands anytime, anywhere. Usually, hand sanitizers available in the market contain active ingredients like isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, etc., to kill harmful diseases spreading microbes on your hands. Alcohol effectively kills harmful bacteria and viruses by breaking the outer protective proteins shield of microbes and dispersing their membranes.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) & other public health experts suggest a hand sanitizer containing lower percentages of alcohol is not efficient in killing harmful microbes from the hand. However, even hand sanitizer containing 90% alcohol concentration is superior to safeguard that it can completely kill germs and viruses rather than just decreasing their growth over your hands.
When should you use hand sanitizer?
CDC recommended that you only use hand sanitizer as a second option when soap and water are not accessible nearby. Ideally, never use hand sanitizer when your hands are greasy or dirty; instead, try to wash hands with soap and water.
But if water and soap are not available, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60% of alcohol as an active ingredient.
